Im going to get pretty deep here, so this post may not be for all of you. Some spoilers towards the end if you haven't seen the whole series.
There is no anime in history that has been able to delve as deeply into the human soul as Code Gaess. The people who do not enjoy it, in my opinion, do not watch it as it is intended to be watched.
Really spend some time thinking about the choices presented to Lelouche throughout the series and the paths he chose. Think about the obsessive, almost indescribable drive that he had to protect his sister. Think about the terrible mistakes he made using, and accidentally using, his Gaess.
Of course to relate to OUR souls, the only thing about I mentioned above that is not feasible is obviously the Gaess ability. But think about it this way. The Gaess ability, in its basic, rawest form, is the ability to control another person. Although we cannot do this with supernatural eye powers, humans are nonetheless, capable, and currently, controlling people all over the world.
My point is, thinking about his feelings, his goals, his tragedies, those closest to him.....one cant help to be able to identify parts of your own soul while watching this show.
Further.....where this anime exceeds all others.....is its ability to see even past your soul, to a place where you hide all the things you know to be true....but things you know your morality (if you believe in it, and if it is good natured) would maybe keep you from admitting to yourself.
In the end, Lelouche became a figure of evil. He did this to be able to concentrate all of the worlds built up anger and frustrations and aim it upon him. Then, to prove that he really truly became evil to create a world full of peace, a world united under one front, he executed the final act of the plan, his own murder, perpetrated by the one person who could catalyze unification, the character of Zero.
Look, ask yourselves this. When Lelousche became evil, through the impact of his plan, there were hundreds of thousands of innocent people killed. Who knows, maybe More? The show doesn't tell us.
IF THIS WAS REAL AND IT WAS OUR PLANET AND YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO GO BACK IN TIME AND CONVINCE HIM TO LEAD A NORMAL LIFE OR KILL HIM........WHO EVEN CARES WHICH ONE.......WOULD U STOP HIM FROM CREATING AN ENTIRE PLANET UNITED AS ONE AT THE EXPENSE OF APPROXIMATELY 01% OF THE WORLDS POPULATION?
I think that any sane person would think no, no I would not stop him. Granted they would probably tell people that they would never let innocecnt people die for anything, and respond by saying that its too complex of a question to answer. BUT THAT'S NOT IT AND YOU KNOW IT.
I watched this and realized that in MY soul I am willing to give up the lives of a lot of people if it meant something as incredible as a unified earth. Selfish as I am, I am not sure if I would be capable of giving up my own life for it, but in my heart, I think I would make the write choice if I had to.
What this show has shown us I think that even in the greatest most purest of souls, there is an understanding that sometimes, as even though life is the most precious thing we are aware of in the universe, it can, and should, be sacrificed.......even if those sacrificed were INNOCENT fathers, mothers and children, if a .05% chance of something remotely similar to Code Gaess were to happen in the real world.
Made me pretty scared....but it woke me up too. Code Gaess stares your soul in the eyes and commands it to speak the truth. Pretty ironic isnt it?
ps on top of ALL that, its action scenes ROCK!! Not to mention the battle strategies, great mechs and hot anime boobies!! i mean wow!!!
